The Association of Water Technologies (AWT), the world’s largest and most influential organization in the water treatment industry, proudly announced that John Caloritis will serve as the Association’s President for the upcoming term. AWT is celebrating its 35th anniversary this coming year, marking over three decades of leadership and innovation as the voice and standard of the water treatment industry.
Career Rooted in Chemistry and Commitment
With a distinguished career of more than 40 years in the water treatment industry, John’s journey is a testament to dedication, innovation, and leadership. John embarked on his professional path in 1983, armed with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the State University of New York at Brockport. His entry into the water treatment industry marked the beginning of a remarkable 40-year tenure with Metro Group (formerly Metropolitan Refining Company). During his early years, John played a pivotal role in expanding Metro Group’s customer base across various geographies and markets. His diverse responsibilities in local, regional, and national sales and business operations showcased his ability to drive growth and success through a focus on client needs, technological advancements, and competitive strategies.
Passion and Perseverance for Water Treatment
John’s passion for water treatment has been the cornerstone of his career. His commitment to continuous learning and growth, coupled with a deep sense of conscientious customer service, has been instrumental in Metro Group’s success. No journey is without challenges, but through the school of hard knocks, he emerged as a leader in the industry. Earning his Certified Water Technologist (CWT) certification early in his career, he proudly holds certificate number 1-0028, a testament to his expertise and dedication.
Transitioning to Technical Leadership at Metro Group
In 2004, John transitioned into his current role as Technical Director at Metro Group. In this capacity, he shifted his focus to serving internal customers, helping colleagues develop the skills, tools, and abilities needed to excel professionally. His leadership has been instrumental in cultivating a culture of continuous improvement and excellence, supporting chemical manufacturing and shaping Metro Group’s in-house Laboratory , and ultimately the emergence of its own microbiology laboratory. Notably, the lab now holds CDC ELITE certification for Legionella and is ELAP approved for Legionella, along with several other species, setting a standard of quality and reliability in the industry.
Celebrating a Century of Excellence at Metro Group
As Metro Group approaches its 100-year anniversary in the coming year, John’s leadership takes on even greater significance. This milestone celebration will honor the company’s century-long commitment to innovation, quality, and service in the water treatment industry. John’s role as President of the AWT aligns perfectly with this momentous occasion, reflecting his enduring contributions to both Metro Group and the broader water technologies community globally.
A Pillar of the AWT Community
John’s contributions to AWT have been notable. Recognizing the enormous value of AWT and its tools, he began volunteering more than a decade ago. He has served on the Cooling Subcommittee, chairing it for 3 years, where he and that team delivered impactful projects that have made a significant difference for AWT members. John’s involvement with the Legionella Task Force led to the publication of “Legionella 2018 – A Position Statement and Guidance Document,” a crucial resource for the industry. Additionally, he participated in the initial development of the ASSE 12080: Professional Qualifications Standard for Legionella Water Safety and Management Personnel, further solidifying his impact on the industry.
